Position Requirements
Following is a general list of positions available in the Youth, Parks & Recreation Department.  Included is a brief summation for that position plus the level of certification required for the slot.

Please be aware that the job descriptions that follow are not complete, nor are they intended to be complete.  Each job description also includes other assigned duties and each employee will comply with all reasonable requests of their supervisors.  Facility orientations will address day to day specifics and you should see your immediate supervisor with any questions you may have.

In general, we expect each employee to not only complete their specific duties but also be prepared to deal with patrons in a polite, positive manner; answer phones promptly and professionally; provide information and direction in a friendly, courteous manner; be fully accountable for their work performance and treat customer service as a priority.  Please remember we are a service organization, our reason for existing is to provide service to the public so we expect you to go to the greatest lengths possible to assist patrons within the guidelines of department policies explained in your orientation.

Fitness Class Instructor

Hours: Vary based class demand and facility operational hours

Pay Rate: Dependent on experience - starting at $17.15

Reports to: Facility Director

Must be 18+ to apply.  Instructors are responsbile for planning and delivering dynamic and exciting classes.  These classes may be aquatic or land based. Previous instructing experience or an acceptable certification is required. 

                         

Personal Trainer 

Hours: Vary based client availabilityand facility operational hours

Pay Rate: Dependent on experience - starting at $17.15

Reports to: Facility Director

Must be 18+ to apply.  Background in exercise science or closely related fields is required.  Duties include planning and delivering individualized training session for clients.  In order to personal train clients, junior year enrollment or higher in exercise science or closely related field and/or a personal training certification is required. Gym Attendant

Hours: During facility operational hours

Pay Rate: Dependent on experience - starting at $15.00

Reports to: Facility Manager

Must be 18+ to apply.  Background in exercise science or closely related fields is preferred.  Duties involve supervision of the Gym, maintaining cleanliness of machines and fitness area, and providing a safe environment for all AFC patrons. (C,F)

 

Front Desk Staff 

Hours: During facility operational hours

Pay Rate: Dependent on experience - starting at $13.50

Reports to: Membership Coordinator

Must be 18+ to apply.  Complete customer service for all patrons at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.  Responsible for selling and maintaining all memberships, class fees, pro shop items, pool/classroom rentals, gift certificates and managing all incoming phone calls.  Must accurately account for monies received and provide a balanced cash out under the direction of AFC Director and Membership Coordinator. Computer knowledge required.

 

Lifeguard 

Hours: During facility operational hours

Pay Rate: Dependent on experience - starting at $15.50

Reports to: Facility Manager

Primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies.  Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, enforcing aquatic facility policies, enforcing rules and regulations, inspecting the facility daily, completing records and reports, participating in in-service trainings, maintain an acceptable level of fitness through regular exercise, and completing any other duties as assigned.  (C,F,L)

 

Pool Supervisor

Hours: During facility operational hours

Pay Rate: Dependent on experience - starting at $16.00

Reports to: Facility Manager

Responsible for lifeguard staff at pool, final cash outs and verification of cash outs, total operations of AFC when full time staff is not present and public relations with members and patrons.  (C,F,L)

Weekend Baseball – Responsible for confirming with baseball crews that all diamonds are playable and making sure they are all ready for play.  Notifies public, coaches and umpires via automated answering system, posting on website, and phone on status of games.  Prepares diamonds for T-Ball and Machine Pitch, updates automated answering system and website daily.  Computer knowledge required. (F)

Basketball Instructor –  Runs practice sessions for Instructional League.  Teaches basic skill of basketball to participants as directed in TTYPR basketball manual. (F)

Score Keeper –  Keeps the official hand written score for league games that get turned into the Youth, Parks & Recreation Office for standings. Maintains crowd control during games. (F)

Time Keeper –  Runs time clock during league games, assist referees with questions regarding score and times. Maintains crowd control during games.(F)

Assistant Manager – Responsible for selling tokens, booking of rentals, handling cash generated, completion of forms, opening and closing facility and enforcing batting cage/outdoor range rules and regulations.  Also responsible for routine maintenance such as picking up trash, netting repairs, un-jamming machines, routine machine maintenance and clearing baseballs and softballs. Provides first aid/CPR if needed, and acts as a liaison between Department and public.  Computer knowledge required. (C, F)

Attendant – Responsible for selling tokens, handling cash generated and enforcing batting cage rules and regulations.  Also responsible for routine maintenance such as picking up trash, netting repairs, un-jamming machines and clearing baseballs and softballs.

Driving Range Picker - Maintain the field on the range throughout the normal daily operations by retrieving and washing golf balls.

Attendant – Responsible for selling daily and season passes, handling and managing all cash generated and enforcing Boat Harbor rules and regulations.  Also responsible for routine maintenance such as picking up trash and clearing seaweed.

Golf Course Cashier - Perform daily green fee sales operations. Computer knowledge required.  (F)

Golf Course Ranger - Rangers will be responsible for keeping track of groups playing on the course, repairing ball marks on greens and raking sand traps daily.

Golf Course Starter - Perform daily tasks of getting the golfing public onto the golf course by pre booked tee times and/or through a bag line system.

Assistant Manager – Monitors skating sessions and hockey games/practices, controls cash of concession operation, in charge of Arena when full-time staff is not present, provides first aid/CPR if needed, and acts as a liaison between Department and public. Computer knowledge required. (C, D, F)

Concession Staff Member – Responsible for all financial transactions, along with stocking, organizing and noting items needed, along with cleaning equipment. Computer knowledge required. (F)

Skate Guard - Responsible for enforcing all rules and regulations especially during recreation skate.  Cleaning and maintaining pad, casino and offices, be familiar with cash register and daily pass sales.    Also, assisting during ice resurfacing, score keeping, general knowledge of facility, events and public relations.  (F)

Kids Club Supervisor
Hours: 2:30-6:15pm on school days, in addition to early release days, snow days, and school breaks, and any meetings and trainings scheduled by supervisor
Reports to: Youth Bureau Director

General Responsibilities:
Assist with staff training, orientation, and scheduling (interviews and hires done by Youth, Parks and Recreation Department Senior Recreation Supervisor)
Coordinate and plan activities, daily schedules
Communicate with parents, staff, and children on a daily basis
Open and lock up building, secure equipment each day
Conduct monthly staff meetings and annual parent orientations
Review medical logs and any accident and incident reports daily
Field trip organization, supervision
Inventory supplies, recommend purchases
Respond to emergencies, behavioral problems, and handle any other issues that may arise
Complete and maintain necessary paperwork
Monitor health and safety of children and staff
Manage overall program content and structure

Qualifications:
College credits in Education, Recreation, or related field
2 years’ experience in a day camp or related field
First Aid and CPR certifications (offered through Town of Tonawanda Youth, Parks & Recreation at no cost to employee)

Youth Center Attendant
Hours: 3-6pm on school days, in addition to early release days, snow days, and school breaks, and any meetings and trainings scheduled by supervisor
Reports to: Kenmore Youth Center Supervisor, Recreation Coordinator, and also Senior Recreation Supervisor and Director of Youth, Parks & Recreation Department

General Duties:
Supervise room or group as assigned
Interact with children, parents, and co-workers in a positive and respectful manner
Implement the planned activities designed by the KYC Supervisor
Monitor use of supplies, equipment, and furniture to ensure safety and security
Complete accident and incident reports as needed
Monitor behavior by the use of a behavior modification system
Report any problems or concerns to supervisors
Administer general First Aid
Notify supervisor in the event of an absence, get shift covered 

Qualifications:
College student or graduate, preference given to those with credits in Education, Recreation, or related field
Experience working with children a plus

Summer Camp Counselor
Hours: 7:15am-1:00pm or 1:00-6:00pm, Monday-Friday during summer camp, in addition to trainings and meetings
Pay Rate: Dependent on experience - starting at $13.50
Reports to: Assistant Camp Director

Position Purpose: 
Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper.  The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their camper group within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
    • Assures campers are properly supervised at all times.
    • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
    • Monitor behavior by the use of a behavior modification system.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.
  • Responsible for leading or assisting with the teaching of activities.
  • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
  • Provide for a progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
  • Assist in program areas such as swimming, sports, enrichment, and arts and crafts as directed.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  • Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
  • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by Health Director.
  • Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems; discuss with Health Director and/or Camp Director when appropriate.
  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to camp director.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members.
  • Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.
  • Follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp.

Other Job Duties:

  • Provide supervision for campers while campers are transported to and from camp or during scheduled field trips off of camp property.
  • Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
  • Complete accident and incident reports as needed.

  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
  • Physical ability to work around small children including sitting, standing, running, bending, stooping, and climbing stairs.
  • Ability to walk long distances and move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.

Summer Camp Activity Coordinator: Group Games and Special Activities
Hours: 11:00am-5:30pm Monday-Friday during summer camp, in addition to trainings and meetings
Pay rate: Dependent on experience - starting at $15.50
Reports to: Camp Director

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop and deliver a group game program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers
    • Write lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers.
    • Evaluate abilities of campers and staff.
    • Design and deliver progressive group game activities.
    • Evaluate the success of the group game program.
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures
    • Assist in the implementation of staff training for group game.
    • Train other staff in their responsibilities when at group game.
    • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures.
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the group game area
    • Maintain and ensure the security of the group game equipment and supplies, including clear inventory and planning for replacement of supplies in a timely manner.
    • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
    • Clean group game area, keeping it free of hazards and debris.

Other Job Duties:

  • Work as part of leadership team, sharing lesson plans with other activity coordinators (Sports & Fitness Coordinator, Art & Enrichment Coordinator, Teambuilding Coordinator) to ensure a well-rounded, non-duplicated range of activities for campers.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise special events, field trips, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.

  • Age 18 or older.

Summer Camp Behavior Specialist
Hours: 9am-4pm Monday-Friday during summer camp, in addition to trainings and meetings
Pay rate: Dependent on experience - starting at $18.25
Reports to: Camp Director

Position Purpose:
The Behavior Specialist will work closely with identified campers, their families, and camp staff to coordinate behavior plans and activity adaptations, as feasible, for success at camp. Will also provide intervention, de-escalation, and behavior management techniques as needed throughout the day at camp.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist the Camp Director in the design, delivery, and evaluation of a camp program that meets the needs, abilities, and interests of youth and the camp’s target markets to ensure their delivery in a safe and quality manner.
    • Remain current with information on the developmental needs of youth and apply them in the camp setting.
    • Annually seek and analyze input from youth, families, and staff regarding the quality, safety, and enjoyment of the program and staff.
    • Develop and implement crisis and risk management procedures.
    • Design and ensure delivery of programs and activities appropriate to the camper population.
  • Developing and implementing plans to address behavioral issues for identified campers.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians and camp staff to assess camper’s needs and implement plans.
  • Work with Activity Coordinators and camp counselors to adapt camp activities as needed for identified campers.
  • Observe and assess camper’s behavior.
  • Monitor and record progress.
  • Assist with implementation of human resource management practices to recruit and retain seasonal and year-round staff.
  • Recruit staff based on camper enrollment and program management requirements.
  • Assist with planning and leading camp staff trainings, especially topics such as behavior management and modification, de-escalation techniques, etc.
  • Assist with overseeing the daily operations of day camp.
  • Handle camper behavioral needs and issues in accordance with camp’s behavior plan. If needed, elevate to Camp Director.
  • Handle staff performance issues in accordance with employee policy. If needed, elevate to Camp Director.

Summer Camp Desk Monitor
Hours: 7:15am-1pm or 12:30-6:15pm, Monday-Friday during summer camp, in addition to trainings and meetings
Pay rate: Dependent on experience - starting at $13.50
Reports to: Assistant Camp Director

General Duties:
Manage the sign-in and sign-out process
Answer the phone, provide information and answers as needed
Help direct people entering the building
Be knowledgeable about camp policies, activities, and other programs taking place in the building/park and run by the Youth, Parks & Recreation department
Know where camp groups and staff are at all times to be able to locate them if needed
Check for completeness of registration paperwork
Provide important reminders to parents/guardians (what to bring, upcoming trips, etc.)
Complete various tasks/projects as assigned by supervisors
Have a positive demeanor with a focus on customer service
Complete accident and incident reports as needed
Report any problems or concerns to supervisors
Administer general First Aid
Notify supervisor in the event of an absence, get shift covered

Qualifications:

Camp Nurse
Hours: 8am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday during summer camp, in addition to trainings and meetings
Pay rate: $33.25
Reports to: Camp Director

General Duties:
Maintain all medical records
Keep all medicines locked
Dispense medicines as noted on medical forms and keep accurate records of all medicine dispensed
Keep accurate records of all injuries and illnesses
Contact Health Department and parents when needed
Check first aid supply inventory regularly and replenish as needed
Instruct staff on First Aid related procedures (ie when to bring a child to nurse and when to administer themselves)
Review medical records with Camp Directors and Camp Counselors regarding allergies and other medical conditions staff should be aware of

Qualifications:
At least 21 years of age
LPN or RN
Current CPR certification
Experience in working with youth and/or individuals with special needs

Preferred qualifications:
School nurse
Experience working at a summer day camp

Ken-Ton resident

Supervisor – Keep communication between other playground supervisors, maintenance personnel and direct supervisors.  Responsible for opening the facility and preparing it for the day, ensuring all equipment is safe to use, providing age appropriate activities and games for all participants, maintain friendly environment, provide special events and activities and unique at least once per week.  (C,F)

Branch Leader – Plan, coordinate, carryout activities for satellite senior centers in Ken-Ton Area.  (C,D, F)

Class Instructor – Teach and assist senior citizens in a specific class they have registered for. (C, D, F)

Erie County Nutrition Coordinator – Prepare lunch for pre-registered senior citizens by heating food brought from the Marriott Corp to exact temperature.  Count money taken in and order meals. 

Office Worker – Assist in day-to-day operations in the Office, i.e. signups, updating members and signing up new members. (C, D, F)

Van Dispatcher – Receive calls from seniors for appointments, writes van schedule, and coordinate rides to and from destinations. (C, D, F)

Van Drivers – Safely drive senior citizens to and from Doctor appointments, shopping and various other destinations.  (F)

Youth Engaged in Service (YES) Supervisor
We are looking for part-time staff to help supervise our youth volunteers! Our YES volunteers are ages 12-18 and help out at many community events and activities. Our supervisors ensure they are safe, completing tasks successfully, logging their community service hours, and providing customer service to the public. 

Qualifications:
18+
Available evenings and weekends - you sign up for the shifts you are available on a monthly basis

Preferred qualifications:
College student or graduate studying Education or related field
